Deciding Whether You Need a New Air Conditioner
Published: August 1, 2016 | Replacement Guide
Most air conditioners are built to last 10โ20 years, provided they are professionally installed and maintained. However, every system has its limit. Knowing the signs of a failing unit can save you from a total breakdown in the middle of a hot Indiana summer.
๐ System Age
Once a system crosses the 15-year mark, efficiency drops significantly. Even if it “seems” fine, it’s likely costing you much more in monthly utilities than a modern unit would.
โก Efficiency Spike
If your energy bills are climbing for no apparent reason, your AC is likely struggling to keep up. Older units have to run longer and harder to reach the same temperature.
๐ ๏ธ Frequent Repairs
Repairs should be rare. If you’re calling a technician more than once or twice a year, those small bills are better spent as a down payment on a reliable new system.
The Earl’s Decision Rule
A good rule of thumb: If the cost of a repair multiplied by the age of the unit is more than the cost of a new system, itโs time to replace. Don’t throw good money after a system that’s on its way out.
