Are You Changing Your Air Filter Often Enough?
Published: August 14, 2016 | HVAC Maintenance Basics
Many homeowners don’t realize just how important their air filter is to a properly functioning HVAC system. Avoiding this simple task can do a lot more harm than good. Changing your air filter is a task you can and should manage on your own.
Why Does It Matter?
The standard air filter protects the interior components of your system. It prevents dust and debris from entering via return air ducts. If left ignored, the filter becomes congested, restricting airflow and killing your system’s efficiency.
Filter Types & Maintenance Schedules
| Filter Type | Frequency | Earl’s Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Panel Filters | Every Month | Cost-effective but less powerful. Change these frequently to avoid clogs. |
| Pleated Filters | Every 2-3 Months | Highly effective polyester design. Great for air quality but watch for airflow restriction. |
| Permanent Filters | Clean every 2 Months | Not Recommended. Prone to mold and mildew if not dried perfectly before reinstalling. |
Pro-Tip: Set a recurring reminder on your phone! A clean filter is the cheapest way to prevent a $500 repair bill down the road.
